Ocean Guardians is a global child and youth initiative of Resilience Maldives, designed to empower young people to care for and protect the ocean through education, creativity, and action. Guided by a deep connection to the sea and rooted in science-informed understanding, Ocean Guardians nurtures environmental awareness in young minds and offers meaningful pathways for them to express that care and make a real-world impact. The programme bridges learning with creative expression by combining ocean literacy, storytelling, art, and community engagement activities. Through children’s books, educational resources, school-based initiatives, volunteer-led clean-ups, and creative projects, Ocean Guardians turns complex environmental issues into accessible, hopeful narratives that inspire curiosity, compassion, and stewardship. Participation is structured, safe, and inclusive, allowing youth from around the world to join as members and work together to protect the ocean,  whether they live on a coastal island or in a landlocked city. Ocean Guardians is committed to fostering a global community of young stewards who understand that caring for the ocean is both a personal journey and a shared responsibility. By strengthening environmental knowledge, encouraging creative expression, and offering opportunities for real action, the initiative helps cultivate a generation of thinkers, creators, and leaders who see themselves as part of the ocean’s story  today and into the future.

Ocean Guardians envisions a world where children and young people grow up with a deep, lasting connection to the ocean and a shared responsibility to protect it. Our vision is to see young people around the world develop knowledge, empathy, and confidence through creativity, storytelling, and action, becoming lifelong stewards of marine ecosystems. By nurturing connection from an early age, we imagine future generations who care for the ocean with hope, responsibility, and respect.

Ocean Guardians is driven by a love for the ocean and a belief that passion, when nurtured early, shapes lifelong stewardship. Our mission is to inspire children and young people to connect with the ocean through curiosity, creativity, and meaningful action, helping them grow into confident and compassionate protectors of marine ecosystems. By combining ocean learning with storytelling, art, and hands-on experiences in safe and supportive spaces, we transform passion into understanding and understanding into lasting care for the ocean.

Ocean Guardians is guided by care for the ocean and respect for the people and life it sustains. We value curiosity, creativity, and learning, believing that young people grow strongest when they are encouraged to ask questions, express ideas, and understand the world around them. We are committed to safety, inclusion, and kindness, ensuring that every Ocean Guardian is supported in a respectful and nurturing environment. Through responsibility, teamwork, and hope, we believe small actions can create lasting change for the ocean and future generations.

Meet Thakuru! The First Ocean Guardian

Long before Ocean Guardians had a name, before stories were written or flags were raised, there was a turtle who listened. Thakuru was not the fastest swimmer in the sea, nor the largest, nor the loudest. But he noticed things others passed by — the way currents carried stories from distant shores, how coral whispered when it was healthy and fell silent when it was not, how the ocean remembered everything that touched it. As Thakuru travelled from reef to reef and island to island, he began to understand something important: the ocean did not need heroes. It needed guardians. Thakuru became the first!

He learned that protecting the ocean was not about fighting it or owning it, but about caring for it , asking questions, learning patiently, and choosing kindness even when no one was watching. Wherever Thakuru went, he carried these lessons with him, sharing them quietly through example rather than command.

When Ocean Guardians was born, Thakuru became its first Ocean Guardian — not because he was special, but because he chose to care. And that is why every child who joins Ocean Guardians is also called an Ocean Guardian. Like Thakuru, they are learners, creators, and protectors in their own way. Some tell stories. Some make art. Some clean beaches or ask brave questions. All of them matter.

Thakuru does not lead from above. He walks  and swims,  beside every Ocean Guardian, reminding them that the ocean connects us all, and that even the smallest act of care can travel farther than we imagine.

Once you join Ocean Guardians, you are no longer just learning about the ocean.

You are part of its story.

How to Become an Ocean Guardian?

There is no letter delivered by owl, no secret knock, and no hidden doorway. Becoming an Ocean Guardian begins with something much simpler: a love for the ocean and a willingness to care. Ocean Guardians are children and young people aged 8 to 18 years from all around the world who feel curious about the sea and want to protect it in their own way. Some arrive with sketchbooks, some with questions, some with stories already forming in their minds  and some arrive simply ready to learn.

To become an Ocean Guardian, a child or young person fills in a simple membership form with the help of a parent or legal guardian, who gives permission for them to join and take part safely. This consent helps ensure that Ocean Guardians is a supportive, respectful, and protected space for everyone. Membership is free, open worldwide, and guided by kindness, respect for others, and care for the ocean, creating a welcoming place where young people can learn, create, and grow together.

As an Ocean Guardian, you become part of a shared story , taking part in creative projects, ocean learning, community action, and global initiatives such as Re-Imagining Thakuru. And when the journey reaches its next chapter at age 18, Ocean Guardians step forward as Ocean Mentors, continuing to guide and support younger members while remaining connected to the ocean they love.

Once you join, you are no longer just learning about the ocean.
You are helping to guard it!

"Re-Imagining Thakuru" A Community-Created Ocean Guardian

Re-Imagining Thakuru is a yearly Ocean Guardians campaign that invites children and young people from around the world to shape the future of our mascot. Thakuru was created as the first Ocean Guardian, the beginning of a story meant to grow with those who care for the ocean. Each year, Ocean Guardians are invited to share their own creative interpretations of Thakuru through art, illustration, design, or storytelling. Inspired by these young voices, a new version of Thakuru is revealed every World Oceans Day (June 8), allowing the Ocean Guardian to evolve year by year as a living symbol shaped by creativity, care for the ocean, and the values of our members.
